About Gun Permits in Indiana

A permit is not required by the State of Indiana to carry a handgun. However, obtaining a license to carry a handgun can provide legal protection and is recommended.

Important Notice

State law governs the procedures for handgun permits. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and not have any felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions on charges of domestic battery or violence also disqualify applicants.

Application Process

Step 1: Complete Online Application

Prior to visiting the Sheriff's Office, you must complete the online application:

Step 2: Electronic Fingerprinting

Upon completion of the online application, you must have your fingerprints taken electronically at designated L-1 Identity Solutions locations:

  • Call 1-877-472-6917 to schedule an appointment
  • There is an additional fee for electronic fingerprinting
  • Multiple locations available in the area

Important Information

Payment Information

The Indiana State Police Firearms Licensing Unit will no longer accept payment by mail.

  • All payments must be made electronically through the Firearms License Application Portal
  • Contact your Local Law Enforcement Agency for special circumstances

Changes and Updates

The Indiana State Police Department no longer accepts manual forms:

  • Name changes must be completed online
  • Address changes must be completed online
  • Duplicate license requests must be completed online

Processing Time

All applications are subject to a waiting period of up to four weeks for the completion of a criminal history background check. At the conclusion of the background check, the records division will electronically submit the application to the state with a recommendation to approve or deny.

Common Denial Reason

Applicants are frequently denied due to failing to list all previous criminal convictions on the application, which will cause delays in the approval process. Be thorough and honest in your application.
